The Dion Howlin’ Husky Snowshoe Race took place on Saturday, February 22, 2020 at the Mountain Bike Club of Kingston in Glenburnie. This was the finale race and series finale in the 2020 Dion Ontario Snowshoe Running Series.
Conditions were firm and fast for the 6.5km course, featuring a variety of single track trails, ski trails, open fields, rolling forest and a few significant hills.
Bernie Hogan of Bancroft was the first runner to cross the finish in a time of 27:50. Max Benda of Smith Falls finished second in 29:36, followed by David Patalano of Rochester, New York in 30:00. The top male master (over 40yrs old) was Corey Turnbull of Smith Falls in 30:37.
Lisa Leskien of Cambridge won the women’s race in a time of 36:02. Valerie Lessard of Kingston was second in 39:27, followed by Lisa Bootsma of Belleville in third in 41:09. The top female master was Kristina Jacobson of Cambridge in 46:42.
Points were awarded in each race in the Dion Ontario Snowshoe Running Series with each athlete’s top three races counting towards the overall title.
Lisa Leskien took the women’s crown with a perfect score of 3. Lisa had wins at Ignite, Summerstown, Flurry, and Husky, as well as a second place finish at Brighton. Bernie Hogan took the men’s title with a score of 4 for his top three races. Bernie had wins at Ignite and Husky, as well as second place finishes at Goose and Flurry. Lisa and Bernie were awarded handcrafted wooden plaques and Dion Laser 120 Performance Running Snowshoes. A pair of Dion Snowshoes were also given away randomly in each race of the series.
